What is spiritual coaching?

When I think of spiritual coaching, I think of 3 words: hope, direction and exploration. The role of a spiritual coach is to assist clients, to explore their own so-called spirituality and experience transformation. Spiritual coaches might differ in their approaches based on their own belief systems and background.  A typical session often starts with asking a client what the term spiritual coaching means to them, and what their expectations are.

Life coaching or coaching skills are well established. A coach encourages a client to ask questions, so they can identify the solutions to overcome barriers and meet goals. The techniques used are based on psychological principles whereby the client is encouraged to identify their own goals, strengths and abilities, leading to empowerment and client transformation.

Spiritual coaching is considered relatively new as a profession, although in reality many of the same underlying issues covered in general life coaching sessions and the techniques used, are utilised.  Some people desire change in their life, but do not have a person who can provide stimulus to help them find solutions and the structured support necessary to make progress.

I would describe my own approach to spiritual coaching as holistic, utilising knowledge and techniques that might help a person find greater flow and balance in their life - recognising the role of the mind, body and spirit.

I have found this approach to coaching has benefitted clients with the following needs/issues: bereavement, integration of spiritual practices, relationships, conflict with religious upbringing and guiding clients who want to explore existential questions.

The role of a spiritual coach might also include: initiating change, helping a client to think and experience life on a deeper level, developing characteristics including compassion, kindness, patience, self acceptance and self awareness.  Helping to examine deep rooted beliefs and how they might be limiting and effecting their thinking, behaviour and overall wellness. This could lead to clearing out energy blocks and finding a better flow and balance in their daily life.  Leading to   troubling thoughts and behaviours coming into the conscious mind.

Spiritual coaching is able to go deeper into the root of a problem, and sometimes looks at internal and external factors, providing a supportive hand to help a person overcome fear and barriers leading to an increase in inner peace and motivation.

I don't believe spiritual coaching needs to be as action/goal focussed as general life coaching and should be led by the clients aspirations and style of learning/development.

Areas that might be included during a spiritual coaching session:
